On some of the farms located in the beautiful Hex River Valley, farmers and workers have worked together for generations. Since 1994 new opportunities arose for farmer families to become empowered in their industry. Through funding from the South African government and their land reform policy of ‘willing-seller-willing-buyer’, workers could buy existing fully operational farms.
Under the new ownership of empowered farm workers, some have specialized in the export of grapes, especially to the European market. Most of the shareholders continue to live and work on the neighbouring farms, being employed as farm workers.
Fair African Trade have met with the newly empowered farm workers, their Farm Workers Association and neighbouring long established farmers, and have, in conjunction with the shareholders, identified three projects:
